Could Iron Be Draining Your Energy (and Stalling Your Weight Loss)?

Do you find yourself reaching for a biscuit at 3pm, not because you're hungry, but because you can barely keep your eyes open? So many women assume this is simply what midlife tiredness looks like.

But sometimes, that bone-deep exhaustion is your body quietly asking for iron. And it may be affecting your weight more than you realise.

Why iron matters so much in midlife

Iron helps your red blood cells carry oxygen to every part of your body, including your muscles and brain. When your stores run low, everything starts to feel harder.

In early perimenopause, oestrogen swings between extreme highs and lows, a bit like a roller coaster. Those highs can bring heavier, longer or more frequent periods, and each period quietly draws down your iron reserves. Many women don't notice until they're running on empty.

The hidden link between iron and your metabolism

Your thyroid needs iron to make its hormones, and low iron may also affect the conversion of T4 into T3, the active form that keeps your metabolism humming. So when iron is low, both your energy production and your thyroid function can take a hit, which can make weight loss feel so much harder. And here's the twist: an underactive thyroid can also make it harder to absorb iron well, partly because stomach acid production may drop. So it becomes a bit of a chicken and egg situation, with low iron and a sluggish thyroid each making the other harder to fix. The encouraging part is that this loop works in both directions, which is why supporting iron and thyroid health together can make such a difference.

This is something I see in clinic regularly. A woman comes in convinced she's gained weight because she's lost her motivation. When we dig a little deeper, we often find low iron sitting alongside a sluggish thyroid, and sometimes Hashimoto's, the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism, which is why checking thyroid antibodies can be so helpful. She was never lazy. Her body simply didn't have the raw materials it needed.

When tiredness turns into sugar cravings

When you're exhausted, it makes complete sense to reach for something sweet for a quick lift. Most women assume they just need more energy, without ever connecting it to iron.

The trouble is, that sugar hit is followed by a dip, which sends you looking for more. Over time, leaning on simple sugars keeps your blood glucose and insulin on a ride of their own, which makes your energy swings worse and your appetite harder to manage. Over time, that can quietly stall your weight loss efforts. Sugar gives you a quick lift, but so often, what feels like a need for something sweet is actually a need for iron.

Normal isn't always optimal

Many women are told their iron is "fine" because their ferritin (your stored iron) sits within the lab range. But a result within range doesn't always mean your stores are enough for how you feel, and ferritin can read higher than it really is when inflammation is present. You can even be iron deficient without being anaemic. If your symptoms don't match your results, it's worth a closer look.

One important note: please don't start iron supplements without testing first. Too much iron can be harmful, so it's always best to know exactly where you stand. A thorough check includes a full blood count, ferritin, transferrin saturation and CRP, plus thyroid testing where appropriate. And if your periods are very heavy or your tiredness isn't lifting, please see your GP to find out why.

Small steps that make a difference

Build each meal around a good serve of protein that also brings iron, such as red meat, eggs, seafood or lentils. This helps steady your blood sugar too, so those afternoon cravings ease.

Pair plant sources of iron with vitamin C rich foods like capsicum, citrus, kiwifruit, strawberries or tomatoes to boost absorption. And try to keep your tea and coffee away from meals, as they can block the absorption of plant-based iron.

What you're feeling is real

If you've been blaming yourself for low energy and creeping weight gain, please be gentle with yourself. This is physiology, and your body is simply asking for support. It's something we can work out together.
